As the rut comes to an end in late October, bulls will begin leaving the herd. This time of year it is crucial for bulls to focus all of their attention towards feeding as winter closes in. Mature herd bulls in our areas will lose up to 35% of their body weight during the rut. Bulls retreat into areas that offer plenty of feed and cover. Bulls are vulnerable this time of year as they are often by themselves. Occasionally, we will hear bulls bugling during this hunt. We spend most of our time hiking ridgelines and glassing country. Once we locate the bull we are after, it is a matter of stalking within rifle range. Hunters should arrive in good shape and ready to walk up to several miles each day. Average shots are 300yds, but hunters should be prepared to shoot out to 400yds. Shooting opportunity has been 90% over the last 5 seasons.
